DIY Hot Chocolate Body Scrub

Shhhh! I have a secret to share. Making your own beauty products does not require you to be an expert beauty alchemist. Nor does it require a lot of time or money. Those expensive body scrubs you see in department stores literally take pennies to make. Not only can you save money by making your own products, you can also save your skin from harmful chemicals like parabens and sulfates.

This 100% natural body scrub is ultra-hydrating and is the perfect scent to wake up to on a chilly winter morning. Not to mention, it’s a great Christmas gift for all your gal pals! But those aren’t the only perks of the scrub. Each ingredient plays an important role in keeping your skin healthy and happy.

Cacao (the unroasted version of cocoa) is power-packed with antioxidants. In fact, it has 40x more antioxidants than blueberries. These antioxidants are tiny soldiers marching around your body, ushering in health and rejuvenation. These antioxidants protect your body from free radicals, which cause damage and aging to your skin.

And what’s all the fuss about the coffee beans? They’re included for more than the hipster trend, or energy-giving effect. The caffeine found in coffee beans increases circulation and helps reduce cellulite (Can I get an amen?). On top of aiding in circulation, coffee beans also peel away dead skin cells.

Fact: Sugar is bad for your intestines, but GREAT for your skin. The sugar in this recipe acts as our main exfoliator. Cane sugar naturally contains alpha-hydroxy acids, which remove dead skin cells and increase our skin's moisture retention. This allows for your skin to feel silky-soft.

It's worth noting that brown sugar is softer than white sugar. You can modify the recipe with brown sugar if you prefer to make a face scrub. As with any face scrub, avoid eye areas.

Because the sugar exfoliates the top layer of skin, the coconut oil can penetrate the skin and create an ultra-hydrating effect. Coconut oil is a natural antibacterial and antifungal, which means it’s the perfect ingredient to fight pesky body acne.
